So I just got back from Texas for the holiday. I had a chimichanga one day. I was asked if I wanted hot sause OR cheese. Well, of course, I wanted both. But if given the choice I had to go for cheese.

What would you have done? Hot sause or cheese?

Why can't find nachos like they serve at Taco Cabana in SF? I had some 2 days ago in Houston. OMG...cheesy goodness!

Penguin's Party

Some penguins simply spend their time standing in large groups waiting for their time in the inner circle to keep warm. Some penguins build nests of dirt, grasses or even stones. Penguins have been known to steal pebbles and stones for their nest. Females have been known to prostitute for them. Others simply pass one from their kidney. While this is quite painful, it is known to cause some penguins to have to reschedule holiday parties. Finally, you can say you know one such penguin!

So now that I have passed my 2 small and one larger stone, and I've stopped writhing in pain and crying mommy, I'm ready to party again! The tree is trimmed, the halls are decked and the deck is at the end of the hall. Fa la la la la, la la la la!

This time it'll be:

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2005
STARTING AT 4PM
335 Valverde Dr. in South San Francisco, CA 94080

So again, I ask that you bring your favorite appetizer and a wrapped white elephant gift (something you have around the house is fine) for a crazy Santa gift exchange. (But if you can't bring a thing, don't fret, you'll be taken care of!)

Feel free to bring your other friends or family. Stop by for a quick hello or stay the night. Just come enjoy some holiday cheer.

"Ark," the herald penguins sing, glory to the penguin king!
"Penguin"

Texas Burger

OK, where in Texas do they put a fried egg on top of their burgers?

I lived in South Texas for 24 years and never saw anyone eat a burger like that, but they serve it in NY and CA as a "Texas" burger.

I always thought a true Texas burger was no mayo or ketchup but keep the mustard and onions - a la Whataburger?

i'd like to see threads where everyone gives their recommendations as to the best places for Tex-Mex in various cities.

i'll start one on houston and consolidate the places already mentioned in the "Most Badass Mexican Food?" thread from the Houston, TX tribe.

we (you, me, somebody/anybody) could then go to tribes for San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, etc. and start similar threads and compile the results here

so, what do y'all think?

Chili Con Queso aka Velvetta

Damn, who doesn't like the chilps and queso at the mexican restaurant? This is how I make it at home.

1. Block of velveeta (or the white mexican equivilant if i remember to get some whenever i'm out eating not so tex mex in san francisco's mission district)
2. 1 can rotel tomatoes w/ green chilis, drained
3. bit of cumin
4. lots of fresh cilantro
5. mexican red powdered chili, hot. to taste
6. just a touch of miller lite beer

nuke it. stir it. nuke it some more. eat it on chips. when it cools off, re nuke it. when it dries out from re-nuking it in the microwave, add miller lite or water and stir it up. gets better w/ age in the fridge. ground beef taco meat in it is just bad for you, chorizo even worse. try that sometime.

Hey, I know the story of nachos, but are they considered TexMex? I make them a lot at home with beans, salsa, cheese and sour cream. Sometimes I include jalepenos.

Welcome. Hope to meet nice people here who enjoy a passion for good food.

I recently discovered some frozen tamales from Costco, here in SSF, that I didn't think would be much, but wow, they are fantastic! Almost as good as the real thing. My family used to order them from a factory in Dallas and San Antone.
